Fungos 11/7

A couple of quick fungos to start the day…

  • Nice job out of Curt Schilling in resigning with the Red Sox for a year. In a day when players say it’s not about the money and then take the highest contract despite the situation, it was nice to see an athlete actually make a choice based on situation. You will have a bit more reading about Schilling later on tomorrow.
  • AROD. Nobody knows where he is going to sign. I am sick of reading the “In the Know” people saying where. The fact is nobody knows. Everything you read is pure speculation at this point. He is no lock to go to the Mets who do have bigger issues to fill. The one smart rumor out there is that the Yankees are offering him arbitration. If true, great move by the Yanks. Now they would be entitled to draft picks from the team that signs him. Other than that, don’t believe everything you read.
  • Another sign that the Red Sox are the best run, most stocked organization at this point (man, that killed me to say that)…The Sox are currently talking about using a six man rotation for next year. The rationale is two-fold. One is that it seemed to help Curt Schilling and Dice-K when they had an extra day off. The other reason is it would help keep the innings down for Lester and Buchholz. Progressive thinking here. I guess if a team has six potentially good starters this is a good idea. I can’t imagine alot of teams going with this because of the lack of quality arms.
  • Wouldn’t you just love a few minutes with the general managers of the Pirates, Devil Rays, Nationals, and Orioles? I am sure they are fine men, but man, what are those organizations thinking?

That’s it for today. Be sure to check out the feature on instant replay. Check back tomorrow for more fungos as well as a feature on Schilling and Clemens. Hit back with any responses.

It’s Saber, from over at OS. Great job… and here are some comments:

    * I think the ARod “sweepstakes” will be the most overrated part of the summer. Fact of the matter is only 5 or 6 franchises are both interested in himm and have the money to aquire him.

*As for the 6 man rotation, the Yanks were rumored to be doing the same thing and were beset by injuries. I’m not sure that any organization is so well run they can field 6 above average pitchers. Granted the Red Sox don’t necessarily have to with some of the offensive weapons they have, but my point is still valid.

Totally agree about the AROD thing. I remember when the Yanks were going to try 6 guys. But, as of now, the Sox do have 6 quality starters. I think it’s a win-win for them. They can give someone an extra rest once in a while or just keep going with the 6. Like I said, I can’t see this becoming a wave of the future because not too many teams will have 6 quality, healthy arms, you know?

  3. Saber says:

Exactly. If it works out in Boston, I CAN see more teams trying it in an attempt to trade some guys. Those enigmatic AAA guys who just never seem to break through – bring ‘em up to the bigs, pitch ‘em every 6 days and hope something good happens. The other problem with a 6 man rotation is it takes away either a bullpen player or bench player. Granted, in the case of the Red Sox, there’s Tim Wakefield who can pitch in any role – but he’s obviously a special case.

You’re right. Other teams will try to copy. But, they won’t think that Boston has the arms to do it. I can see those AAA guys with 6 ERA’s real soon.
