A couple of quick hits for today…

In case you missed it (which you probably didn’t since you are reading this) the Phillies and Astros made a trade of significance. The Phils sent outfielder Michael Bourn, reliever Geoff Geary, and 3B Michael Costanzo to the Astros for Brad Lidge and Eric Bruntlett. At first glance this looks like a big victory for the Phillies. This move should allow them to put Brett Myers back in the rotation. Myers, who should have never left the pen, could be the best addition to a starting rotation this off-season, unless Johan gets dealt of course. Brad Lidge may respond from a change of scenery, but has to be considered as a shaky proposition going into the season. It’s hard to see what Houston is thinking here. Bourn, while fast and a plus defender, hardly has the OBP to be a great leadoff hitter or an elite base stealer (what’s the cliche?–you can’t steal first). I will withhold judgment, as we all should, until Houston finishes the winter. I would hope that filling the bullpen void is a priority. For the moment, the Phils look like the clear winner if Lidge can return to previous form. The ’Stros pretty much reaquired a Willy Taveras clone.

It looks like Roger Clemens may just hang them up. He is set to begin his 10 year service contract with the Astros. Of course his agent left the door open for a return, but I can’t see a team willing to take a chance. The Rocket was the best pitcher of the modern generation. We were fortunate to see him work all of these years.

Big Hank Steinbrenner stated that the Yankees would not part with the three pitching prospects (Joba, Hughes, and Kennedy). While I agree about the first two, I wouldn’t mind dealing Kennedy for the right player. I find it interesting that Wang hasn’t been mentioned. But, I would not deal any of them for Miguel Cabrera. Cabrera is a talented player, but a poor fit for New York. The first sign of the rumored laziness would result in a the typical media blitz.

News in Minnesota has them looking to upgrade the offense. Rumors are Matt Garza is available. Hello Mets…
That’s it for today. Be sure to check out the feature on Clemens vs. Schilling. Fire back anything that comes up. See ya tomorrow.

*the Houston/Philly trade was just weird on both sides really. I know Philly fans were expecting more from Bourne since Rowand is almost certainly gone. As for the Astros… if they needed a 4th or 5th outfielder, they should have kept Jason Lane. Lidge - who knows? I think the kid is cooked.

Lidge is the big X-factor in all of this. If he can come close to matching his former self, the Phillies get a huge lift having put Myers back in the rotation (who I’ve read is complaining about it already). It’s hard to tell what Houston is thinking thus far.

… so Myers doesn’t want in the rotation?

He said he would go in, but thought he really found himself as a closer. He said something to the effect that others told him he was suited for the role and he really liked it. He did say he would do what the Phillies wanted though.
