Fungos–11/9

A few quick hits before heading in to the weekend…
- So, yesterday the Boston Globe reports that 11 current free agents are going to be named on the Mitchell Report. Well, it seems as if that’s wrong as they have already retracted their statement. Like I’ve said a few times since I’ve started this thing, I am so tired of the media trying to be the first with the news. Get it right for a change. I understand it’s about money and competition, but for once, I would love a news outlet to wait on a story. Plus, what exactly are we going to learn? Are we going to be shocked that some guys took steroids, HGH, and whatever other concoction? These free agents will still get their contracts, baseball will still go on. I just want this report to come out already so we can get the attention back on the field.
- In the Oakland papers, Billy Beane discussed the direction the team may go. He doesn’t know if he’s going to blow the team up or try to add to it. Beane said it will depend largely on the health of Eric Chavez, Rich Harden, and Justin Duchscherer. It will be interesting to see the decision he makes (he stated it will be made by the winter meetings) as having Dan Haren, Joe Blanton, and even Chavez on the market could make for some interesting deals.
- I find it pretty funny that media outlets (I guess I’m on their case today), are continually reporting about AROD not getting a whole lot of interest. Here’s some breaking news for ya–he’ll get a nice, hefty contract by some team. Some team will pony up the dough for him. You heard it here first!
- Finally, Texas papers are talking about the availability of third basemen Hank Blalock. Here’s a guy whose stock has gone down recently due to injuries. If you take a look at his numbers before his shoulder injury and after he took care of the problem, they are pretty solid. Sure, he has some issues, but he’s solid guy to pickup. He seems like a good fit for the Yankees, although adding yet another lefty to their lineup will probably stop that from happening.
Have a great weekend everyone. Fungos will be back on Monday. It’s been a fun first week here. Thanks to all who have been reading.

As a diehard Ranger fan I’m missing the point of trading Blalock. The Rangers made (in my mind at least) two great deals at the trading deadline last season (Gagne and Texiera). It would seem logical, that with Blalock’s stock at a low right now, they’d hold on to him and try to deal him then. At that point they’d have a better idea of whether Chris Davis or Travis Metcalf can replace him. Name’s that are more likely to be moved in the offseason will more likely include Laird or Padilla.
I agree. I think Blalock is vastly underrated because of his injuries. If you look pre and post injury, he has been solid. I don’t think the Rangers should deal him now or even later unless they think Metcalf is ready.
I’d love for the Indians to take a run at Blalock…. Won’t happen, but you guys can gladly have Marte from us. Who knows, he could be the next Brandon Phillips.
Love the site btw! =)
Thanks Dave. I am having alot of fun with this. I know Marte flopped last year, but does he need more time or was he overhyped?
Marte on a team like Texas that isn’t expected to contend might help. Who knows really? If the Sox never dealt Ramirez to the Fish for Beckett, would he have blossomed into the beast his is right now on a club that expects big things from their SS (yet still aren’t getting it). In either case I can’t imagine the Rangers would deal him directly for another 3rd baseman (especially a young/unproven and so for unproductive player). However: they would be mighty interested in a Ryan Garko maybe.
