Turn out the Lights
By Gary Armida
…These are the last words I have to say
That’s why this took so long to write
There will be other words some other day…
It is with after much thought that I announce that I FCP will be closing up shop as of today. I have enjoyed writing since November of 2007, but I have come to realize something quite important over the past month. Sadly, I realize that I am older and actually require more than three hours of sleep a day. It was not an easy decision to “pull the plug” on a site that is continuing to grow and mature, but it was one that needed to be made. The daily grind of producing quality, original articles has been taking a toll. As I said, I have loved every minute of writing, every exchange between you and me, and every opportunity I got to talk baseball with so many people. Before saying the official goodbye, I do want to thank a few people.
- First, I would like to thank my wife for helping with this decision and all of her support.
- I thank my daughter for being born…it was the greatest day in the history of my life.
- I want to thank my parents who were the first two readers of the site during the days when there just four of them.
- A big thank you goes to early writers on the site, Andrew Armida and Doug Hill. Their contributions during the early days were invaluable. Also, a big thanks to our Mets Insider and voice of our early podcast, Jeff Keeperman.
- Pete Mrsich who took the time to design our banners for nothing in return. I thank my “long lost” friend of over 25 years for re-connecting, helping out, parent advice emails, and for an MLB The Show opponent.
- Scott Zahn gave me a tremendous opportunity to work with Rick Peterson. He is someone I have come to admire for his hard work, dedication, and ability to see the big picture.
- Thanks to the “Friends of FCP”, especially Mike Silva, Maury Brown, and the legendary Jimmy Scott. Each has inspired, helped, and allowed for some enjoyable reading. I will continue to be a daily reader of their sites.
- Thanks to all of the readers. It was a great give and take. I’d like to single out early readers/supporters Bill Brinkerhoff, Scott Burress, Mike, Steve (Isles), and current readers/supporters, David Allan, Rudy, and the whole Campione crew.
- I had the absolute pleasure to speak with so many talented and insightful baseball writers. The legendary Ray Ratto was the first to say yes and I will always remember that. He gave his time to a small site with zero interviews under our belt. His interview opened the door to all of our other interviews. There are so many great writers out there and it was a pleasure to speak to them.
- One of my biggest thrills as the site grew was to talk with baseball insiders. I can tell you that Jim Duquette is one of the nicest, most intelligent men I have ever spoken with. I take away from him so much and appreciate the look into the life as a GM.
- Rick Peterson is truly a remarkable human being. He took a chance on me and I hope I delivered for him. The man’s knowledge of pitching is only surpassed by his tremendous perspective of life. He’s someone who will change the baseball world with 3P Sports. It has been a privilege to speak with him.
- I saved the biggest thank you for last…Billy Campione went from a fellow Yankees fan down the hall at work to a good, trusted friend (very rare in this world). His work on this site has been invaluable, not only for his tremendous and original content, but for the growth of the site. I kid him about his Facebook obsession, but I still cannot believe that he spent so much time helping me promote and grow the site. He was always willing to do anything for the site, even if he was in the background. He put up with me pitching so many ideas, so many site re-designs that never happened, and me wanting to talk about the Pirates and Nationals on the radio show (which he would always strike from the agenda-wise move). His selflessness and excellence helped turn FCP into a complete site. I will miss reading his weekly Channeling Harry Doyle columns, but I have no doubts that I will have many conversations for many years. I am proud that Billy has become a Markakis follower. Billy, thanks for everything on the site, the radio show, for your understanding and grace when I spoke about ending the site, and, most importantly, your friendship.
So, where does FCP go from here? Well, it will be around until at least January as the bills are paid until then. But, I won’t be posting any content here. I will head back to simply being a fan, but that doesn’t mean you won’t hear from me. I will be working as a freelance writer so you will see my name pop up from time to time (If anyone is interested in having me or Billy do some freelance pieces, drop us a line). As the Billy Joel quote says, “There will be other words some other day”.
Well, that’s it. I hope it has been as fun for you as it has for me. Thank you for letting me live out my fantasy of writing about baseball on a daily basis. I am proud of this site and pleased to be closing it on such a high note. Thanks again everybody. It has been an honor, a privilege, and a whole lot of fun. I never took for granted that people took the time to read my stuff. It always amazed me. See ya around.

It was the one thing I actually woke up and looked forward to reading every morning. It went with my coffee. Congrats on such a sucessful venture and it was always evident you enjoyed what you were doing by the way you wrote. The daily grind of churning out article after article must have been very difficult and time consuming. Best of luck to you in any future endeavors.

Gary,
Congratulations…I know that sounds like an odd word choice at a moment like this. Let me explain, congrats on getting to live the dream. I have no doubt that all this hard work will recognized and get you where you want to go. Although the timing may not continue to be right, you have produced something pretty amazing here.
You have my information, and please don’t be a stranger. It’s always fun to talk baseball with someone that gets it…even if he is a Yankees fan.
Best of luck in what the future brings,
David.

All the best Gary. I always looked forward to your baseball insight. As a more casual fan of baseball but a stats lover, I’ll miss those z-statistics and everything else you used to post. Your knowledge and passion of the game has served you well and I hope it carries over to your freelance work.
Family comes first and I completely understand this decision. I enjoyed our interaction and I’m sure I will see you around. Good luck to you, Billy and everyone else associated with the site.

Jimmy Scott turned me onto this site, and I’m sad to see it go so soon after discovering its excellence. Baseball is losing one of its better blogs today.

Wow. I am shocked. Gary, it was my pleasure helping out, I truly enjoyed your articles and every piece on this site. I can understand the tolls it must take to hold down a teaching job, and writing a piece nightly…as well as having a baby girl that you just want to spend as much time with as possible…I’m in that boat as well (minus the writing piece) I look forward to reading whatever it is you may post on this site from time to time. All of your pieces were always well written and informative. Like I wrote on Billy’s page – sometimes – you just needed to take a step back from the work day and get lost in an article about something you love, baseball. Best of luck to you and enjoy every minute of your wife and daughter…I know that is what I’m doing with my baby girl and wife.

At first, I tuned into here/read Billy but I quickly grew to appreciate the intelligence the site/show/Gary brought to the table everyday (so much so I was scared to call in and defend my opinion without having pages of facts and research). Sometimes dreams get altered by everyday life but everyday life also yields different dreams.
All the best Gary…

Gary – What an unexpected, and unfortunate, surprise. This is one of the better sites out there and was an inspiration to me. Thank you for spreading your baseball insight to all of us. We’ll miss you.

Well, I must say, I will truly miss reading your great pieces and well spoken articles. Thanks for all you have done here and good luck. Maybe one day……..

Gary,
I was a reader before I wrote for the site and was a reader after. I never missed an article and all I can say is that, no site and no writer on the internet can compare. Sad to see it go. Your next project should be a book.
Thanks for letting me share my feelings about Jackie Robinson with the world! Hopefully I made some Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige fans.
Thanks again
Douglas

No need to thank me, buddy. It was a pleasure and an honor.
You should definitely start up a personal blog, though, with all your thoughts about baseball & parenting – or both at the same time, for that matter. I think you’ll find that without the constant pressure of having to keep up with the *entire* world of the major leagues, you’ll have more fun in writing your pieces.
Your writing skills & knowledge of the game are on par with any blog out there – don’t disappear completely!
I’ll be in touch – we need to hook up again for some more ‘Show’. Did you get your bluetooth headset yet?

Gary I will miss this site so much.I remember the first time I wrote a comment and went on and on and then apoligized for it , you very kindly told me to keep it coming and never worry about length. Billy has told me what a great friend you are to him and that makes you my friend too. Good luck and hopefully there will be more from you in the future. Oh, and thanks for not editing Billy’s kid touching jokes. Bill Sr

I’m going to miss this site a lot also. It was an honor to be a part of the staff in the early days and it was always great to read you and everyone else who wrote or was interviewed. It was amazing to see the site grow so much and it will be sad to see it go. I can’t wait to see what comes in the future.

Like Son, like Father. I couldn’t find the time to get on the site because of another 60 hour work week.
Obviously, I am sad to see the site go, but we have spoken and I totally respect and understand your decision.
As a basball fanatic, I loved being able to read great baseball insights from you and Billy. As a parent, it made me proud to see the direction you took this site, always showing class, and a respect for the game and those who play it. You did a great job, Son; you are destined to write and will someday be making a living through your writing.

Good luck with your future endeavors. I know how you feel. I really, really do.

Wow… Sad day man, but I understand completely where you are coming from. Family priorities always take precedence over this stuff.
Good luck in your future endeavors.
