MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Brewers today re-signed RHP Trevor Hoffman to a one-year contract with a mutual option for 2011. The announcement was made by Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Melvin.
“Trevor is a true professional whose preparation and work ethic is unmatched,” said Melvin. “Every athlete should take note. He is all about winning and not about individual numbers. He has proven to everyone that he wants the ball in pressure situations and will take responsibility at the end of a game, win or lose. We are thrilled to have him back.”
Hoffman, who turns 42 next Tuesday, went 3-2 with a 1.83 ERA and 37 saves in 55 relief appearances this season. He was an All-Star for the seventh time as he went 37-for-41 in save opportunities and held opponents to a .183 batting average. His ERA was the second-lowest of his career behind only his 1.48 mark with San Diego in 1998.
Hoffman is the all-time Major League saves leader with 591, including the most 20+ save (15), 30+ save (14) and 40+ save (9) seasons in the history of the game. His career save percentage of 89.3 (591-for-662) ranks second in Major League history among pitchers who have had at least 300 opportunities. He trails only Mariano Rivera (526-for-588, 89.5%).
