Astros sign third baseman Feliz

HOUSTON, TX – The Houston Astros announced today that the club has signed third baseman Pedro Feliz to a one-year, $4.5-million contract. The announcement was made by General Manager Ed Wade.

Feliz, 34, hit .266 (154×580) with 30 doubles, 12 home runs and 82 RBI in 158 games for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2009. He set a career-high in hits and hit a team-best .336 (47×140) with runners in scoring position. In 1165 games over 10 seasons with San Francisco (2000-07) and Philadelphia (2008-09), Feliz has hit .254 (976×3845) with 197 doubles, 135 homers and 558 RBI.

“We’re very pleased to add Pedro to our infield mix,” said Wade. “He’s been an outstanding defensive player and a solid run producer for his entire career. He played a premium position with a two-time World Series participant and was a key part of the Phillies success. We’re fortunate to have him on-board.”

Feliz finished first in games (155) and double plays (35) among National League third basemen in 2009 and owns a .964 career fielding percentage at third.

“Geoff Blum has done a terrific job for us over the past two seasons, and despite the acquisition of a regular third baseman, we believe Geoff will get his at-bats with us and be a key contributor all around the infield,” Wade said. “It’s been a good week for us.”
