Phillies sign Ruiz to 3-year extension

Catcher Carlos Ruiz signed a three-year, $8.85 million contract extension with the Phillies, taking him through the 2012 season, Assistant General Manager Scott Proefrock announced today. The deal includes a club option for a fourth year. Ruiz had been the final Phillie eligible for salary arbitration.
Ruiz, 31, hit .255 last season with 26 doubles, a career-high nine home runs and 43 RBI in 107 games. In his 100 starts, the Phillies went 57-43 (.570) and he threw out 15 of 76 potential basestealers (19.7%). Ruiz batted a team-best .341 during the 2009 playoffs, starting all 15 postseason games, and hit a 3-run home run off Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series. He also played for Team Panama in the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
In parts of four major league seasons (2006-09), Ruiz has a .246 batting average with 22 home runs and 138 RBI in 366 games.
