Nationals Release Elijah Dukes

The Washington Nationals today unconditionally released outfielder Elijah Dukes. Nationals Senior Vice President and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.
The 25 year old outfielder has a career batting line of .242/.349/.421 in 220 Major League games. A third round pick in 2002 by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the oft-trouble talent was traded to the Washington Nationals in December of 2007 in exchange for Greg Gibson.
Dukes’ talent has been overshadowed by various off the field incidents and team disciplinary infractions. While he has displayed flashes of his talent, he has largely struggled at the Major League level. News of his release is surprising as Dukes entered Spring Training as the favorite to start in right field.
